Every piece of pottery begins with humble clay — raw, formless, waiting to be shaped. At Little Mounds of Clay, we believe each “mound” holds infinite potential. Here’s the story behind our journey, our craft, and the inspiration that drives us.
Our Origin & Vision
Little Mounds of Clay started with a fascination for the tactile—feeling the cool clay slip through fingers, witnessing a lump transform into something useful and beautiful. Our dream was to bring art into everyday life, to let people live with pieces that carry a story.
We aim to craft ceramics that are not just functional but deeply personal—each piece reflecting the maker’s touch, the glaze’s nuance, and the small “imperfections” that make it unique.
Crafting with Care
-
Clay Selection & Preparation: We select high-quality clay bodies suited for durability and finish, then wedge (knead) them to remove air pockets.
-
Shaping: Some pieces are wheel-thrown; others are hand-built (coil, slab, pinch).
-
Drying & Trimming: We allow pieces to reach the leather-hard stage before refining the form.
-
Bisque Firing: The first kiln firing prepares the piece for glazing.
-
Glazing & Decoration: We experiment with slips, textures, wax resist, underglazes, and glazes.
-
Final Firing: The glaze firing seals the form and brings colors to life.
Artistry & Inspiration
We draw inspiration from nature — leaves, stones, shells, water patterns — and from daily life. Texture is key: we sometimes press real leaves or fabrics to impart organic surface detail. Our glazes often echo earth tones: terracotta, ochre, moss green, soft blues.
Challenges & Lessons
Pottery is full of surprises. Glazes might run, cracks appear, or warping sneaks in. Each “failed” piece is a lesson. Over time, we’ve developed thicker walls where needed, controlled drying schedules, and adjusted glaze formulas to respond better to kiln atmosphere.
A Piece with a Story
When you bring home a bowl or mug from Little Mounds of Clay, it’s not just a product — it’s the outcome of trials, inspiration, and a journey through fire and glaze. We hope you’ll tell its story in your space.
Conclusion
Art lives when people use it. Whether for your morning cup of tea or as a decorative accent, we hope our clay pieces become part of your daily rituals. Stay tuned for new collections, workshop updates, and behind-the-scenes glimpses right here.
